Every year, before the Easter season on the Christian church calendar, there is a festival known as Carnival.

Calypso is a genre of music which traditionally speaks about the political, social economic climate of the country or world for that matter-in short current affairs. It is one of the national musics of Trinidad and Tobago. (Others being Chutney, Rapso, Soca) The singers are called Calysonians. Calypsonians say what's on their minds or speak for the "people."

During the Carnival season a competition is held among calypsonians and they vie for the title of Calypso King which is held on Dimanche Gras night. This is the Sunday night before Carnival Monday. There is a separate competition for the queens, however, they are not exempt from taking part in the Calypso Kings competition (started in 1939), which was more recently renamed the Calypso Monarch Competition for this reason).

There is also a Young King's Calypso Competition which was started in 1985.
