The descendants of the House of Israel are the Jewish people. This has been confirmed through blood-work, DNA analysis and consistent historical accounts and is accepted by secular scholars too.

The "from the Khazars" theory (which would deny Jewish ancestry for much of European Jewry) is an anti-Semitic canard made popular by a Jewish Jew-hater named Koestler. It has been debunked by DNA studies on Jewish communities from around the world. It has been found that Ashkenazim, and other Jews from all over the Earth, are quite closely related and originated in the Middle East.

A 2013 study of Ashkenazi mitochondrial DNA found no significant evidence of Khazar contribution to the Ashkenazi Jewish DNA, as would be predicted by the Khazar hypothesis; and although there is no historical or DNA evidence to support the Khazar idea, it is still popular among anti-Semites.

In 2000, the analysis of a report by Nicholas Wade "provided genetic witness that Jewish communities have, to a remarkable extent, retained their biological identity separate from their host populations, evidence of relatively little intermarriage or conversion into Judaism over the centuries. The results accord with Jewish history and tradition and refute theories which would allege that Jewish communities consist mostly of converts."

Recent claims made concerning an Israelite origin of large African-American groups have also been debunked by DNA analyses. These hypotheses (African and Khazar) may now be viewed as frivolous.
