He was part of an expedition that explored the area around Tampa, Florida. He went along the Gulf Coast and ended up at Galvaston Island, Texas. He also traveled in Mexico. He went back to Spain and was sent to Argentina. He had too much sympathy for the natives and was sent back to Spain in disgrace.
When Ferdinand Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, the leadership of the expedition passed to Juan Sebastián Elcano. Elcano, who had been one of the captains under Magellan, took command of the remaining crew and ultimately led them back to Spain. He is credited with completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth after Magellan's death.
