Lord Sydney, officially known as Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, was a British statesman who served as the Home Secretary from 1782 to 1783 and played a key role in the administration of the British Empire. He is best known for his association with the establishment of New South Wales in Australia, for which he was the first Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. His policies contributed to the early governance of the Australian colonies, and Sydney, Australia, is named in his honor. Additionally, he was a member of the House of Lords and held various other political positions throughout his career.
