Excluding the possibility that Lief Erikson sailed to the New World, the Spanish were the first major nation to establish colonies and begin the exploration of the Western Hemisphere. This began shortly after Christopher Columbus, in 1492, stumbled onto to the Western Hemisphere in his search for a faster water route to the Far East. The British, French and the Dutch soon followed.

There is remarkable evidence that Vikings ventured to Greenland and Nova Scotia in the years around 1100-1200 AS CE. or, even earlier. The Vikings or Norsemen, did not make any long term settlements in the new lands they discovered. After a span of another 500 or so years, an explorer under the flag of Spain, Christopher Columbus, made voyages to the Western Hemisphere or "New World" beginning in 1492. This was the beginning of major European nations making permanent settlements and colonies in the New World.
