The leader of ancient Zimbabwe was called Munhumutapa or Mwenemutapa and established himself at what is now known as Great Zimbabwe ruins in Masvingo Province. The King was also refereed to as Changamire. This culture is characterised by stone structures such as Great Zimbabwe and others. This culture is archaeologically classified under Zimbabwe Period III ( between AD 1000 & AD1100). These were the 3rd group of Bantu migrants from the north whose rulers became known as the Mutapas & it is they who constructed stone forts including Great Zimbabwe. The Mutapas later on became known as the Rozvi due to military activities against the Portuguese around 1660.
