Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo (1753 - 1811) led the conspiracy and initial revolt that eventually became the Mexican War of Independence (1810 - 1821).

You should note however, that he was captured and executed during the early years of the revolution (1811), being replaced as leader of the movement, first by Jose Maria Morelos (1765 - 1815) and then by Vicente Guerrero (1782 - 1831). The later consummated the independence of Mexico and became its second president in 1829.
