Three men held that position, with Al Smith as the 42nd Governor serving until 31 December 1920. Smith was unseated in his bid for re-election by Nathan Lewis Miller who served from 1921 and 1922 when Al Smith regained the office to become the 44th Governor. When Smith ran for President in the 1928 election against Herbert Hoover and lost, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the Governor and held that post until 1932 when he ran for and became the 32nd US President.
