In 1032, the Kingdom of Burgundy, which included West Switzerland was conquered by the German Empire. After its power declined, the area was taken over by the Hapsburg Dynasty which had to rule amidst constant resistance. Upon the death of the Hapsburg emperor, several regions which included Schwyz, Unterwalden and Uri joined to form the Swiss Confederation on August 1, 1291. This is recognized of the current birthday of Switzerland.
