Barbeques suit the Australian outdoor way of life. Because of the great weather in Australia, Australians in general spend a lot of time outside. There is less pollution than in the more heavily populated continents, and the temperatures are conducive to outdoor living.

Australian barbeques are no different to anyone else's. The word barbeque is originally of Spanish/Mexican origin which spread to USA and so on. The idea of cooking outside is as old as mankind itself. Barbeques in Australia differ only as much as your BBQ might differ from a neighbour. We do tend to have a lot of them and of course at the opposite time of the year to those in the Northern Hemisphere. We also BBQ things other than just red meat. We also cook small shrimp (about six can fit on a good sized BBQ) and prawns (of course only one can fit unless we use an eight burner). The 'Barbie' is powered usually by charcoal, gas or wood with occasional electric units about. Many people here do have a permanent brick housed BBQ with mains or bottled gas. The BBQ is an important family ritual or a social gathering with friends. (A lot easier to clean up afterwards too).
