The Florida panther, a race of the cougar or mountain lion, is not extinct, and is in fact on a slight rebound. Down to around 30 animals just twelve years ago, due to weaknesses through inbreeding, a plan was introduced to put more diversity in the genetic pool. Eight Texas cougars, females, a very closely related race, were introduced, and all bore cubs. The pumas there now number over eighty, and appear to be thriving.
