It has to do with the amount of snowfall expected. Generally speaking, slanted roofs shed moisture such as snow and rain much better than a flat or less steep roof. Steep roofs in the Southwest would be more for looks than necessity because of the unlikelihood of significant amounts of snow each year.

There are so many different types of roofs out there. My suggestion is to contact a local company and compare pricing and quality for different roof options.
First, mark the roof with chalk lines at intervals. You want to make sure that your plumb lines are straight. Lay your first shingle butted up against the outside of the roof and overlapping the starter strip. Nail it down, with one nail at each corner, just below the asphalt line. Lay the next shingle down, and nail it down. Continue to the end of the roof.
Don't know about the tail lights, but if you have a sun roof the drain lines are probably clogged. I used a small air compressor to blow out the lines. If you don't have a sun roof, sorry.
