Why did Afghanistan use landmines?

The sole purpose of landmines is to severely injure enemy troops and cause an inordinate number of casualties that must be treated.

Quite simply, mines are used to kill or disfigure people. The Soviets placed the majority of the mines that exist in Afghanistan during their ten year occupation of the area. They were later set out by Najibullah Government troops defending against groups such as the Taliban. The mines would help to guard major transportation and trade routes.

Millions of smaller mines were dropped over the area by helicopter in during the occupation. They were designed to look like butterfly toys, but they would explode and sever the child's hands that picked them up. Larger mines kill people that step on them, and even larger ones destroy tanks and other vehicles.

Mines also have a long term impact beyond the initial placements. Afghanistan's agriculture has been severely damaged due to the fact it is just not safe to farm. It has caused food shortages in many areas of the country.
