Many variations of this myth. Some say Hera through him off Olympus and Zeus covered for her but the general idea is that it is because Hephaestus was not pretty and the Olympian Gods were generally really vain. Meaning that they valued looks, Hephaestus was ugly therefore he was thrown from a mountain. There are different variations of course but this is the one I'm familiar with.
