Why did Mecca become the holy city of Islam and not Medina?

both are holy cities... makkah has the kabah( the house of allah) first built by angels, then by prophet ibrahim(abraham), and this city also mentioned in bible. and where as madinah, the final and last prophet was born here.

The reason why Mecca is primary and Medina is secondary is that the Ka'aba or central cube is believed to be the first sanctuary from which the One God was worshiped. According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim rebuilt the shrine there. In homage to the fact that Ibrahim was one of the most important prophets of Islam and the continuity of tradition, Mecca was always more central. Medina was certainly more critical for the development of the religion of Islam (based on Qur'anic Revelation), but did not have this historical connection.

It is holy because God (Allah) has spoken to the mankind (to prophet Mohammad (pbuh) in this city. Also when Allah has created the first human Adam (A.S) he brought him down to this city and has ordered him to build the holy Kaaba. There for in another words its the birth place of humanity and Islam.

Mecca: The Masjid al-Haram or Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in which sits the Ka'aba or Black Cube. Muslims are required, if financially able, to visit the Ka'aba once in their lives in the pilgrimage known as the Hajj. The largest congregational open prayers are done in Mecca and Medina during Pilgrimage called Hajj. The Ka'aba was allegedly built by Ibrahim for Ismail.

Medina: The Masjid al-Nabawi or the Prophet's Mosque in Medina/Yethrib, Saudi Arabia. (The city is known by both names.) This was the second mosque built in the history of Islam, and built adjacent to Muhammad's house in Medina/Yethrib. It established the proper shape and style of mosque building as well as being Muhammad's final resting place.
