Mexico was already a country when the Spanish "discovered" it. It was, to our sensibilities, a rather unhappy country with a group called the Aztecs oppressing most of the others. Before the Aztecs came to power there were other countries more or less conterminous with Mexico, but the earliest of these have been lost to history. The present country, technically the United States of Mexico, won its independence from Spain much as the US won its from England.
