There were many people in Mecca who opposed to his teachings. Previously he had had a series of revelations and had got words from Allah.According to them, he started to peach God's sayings, e.g.: There is no other God but Allah and his prophet is Muhammad. His opposition forced him and his small group of followers to leave Mecca. They fled to Medina in 622 (it is called the HEGIRA), and this year is considered the starting point in the Islamic calendar as well as the founding year of Islam. In Medina, he made an organized community from his followers, and led them into many battles, including a battle against Mecca in 630. During this struggle he united the Arab tribes under Islam (the new religion spreading fast). As a result the Arab Empire was born and now there are about 1 billion followers - Muslims - all over the world.

Why did Muhammad move to Medina from Mecca?

The Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 A.D. At the age of 40, in the month of Ramadan, he received his first revelation from God and three years later started to openly preach the revelations, proclaiming that "God is One", etc. Some of the tribes in Mecca were hostile against Muhammad, hence he and his followers escaped persecution by migrating to Medina (then known as Yathrib) in the year 622 A.D. This event is known as the "Hijra" and marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Why might it have been important for muhammad to return to mecca after the hijrah?

Answer:To cleanse the House of God built by Abraham and Ishamel from the idol worshipping it was used for, and rededicate it to the worship of the One God Alone. In fact, the House of God in Mecca, we Muslims believe, is the "second Jerusalem" that the Bible foretells. The valley of Mecca is in a miraculous location on Earth. You Tube has a videos about the miracle of Mecca - the fact that it's location on the Earth corresponds to the Golden Mean - in every direction. You would have to search for the name of the video, but it's quite remarkable.

Why did Muhammad move the center of worship in Islam to mecca?

Good question! In the beginning, the Muslims prayed facing Jerusalem, as did the Jews. Even Christian churches used to be constructed so that the congregation faced the east as they prayed. One day, while Prophet Muhammad (God bless him and grant him peace) and his companions (God bless them) were offering salat, the formal Islamic prayer, Allah revealed a new verse of the Qur'an, announcing that He had selected a new qiblah (direction of prayer), which was towards Makkah, and specifically towards the Kaabah, the stone house in Makkah that was first constructed by Prophet Adam (God grant him peace) and his son. As they prayed, the congregation swiveled so that they were praying in the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah.
