He traveled to the Baja California Peninsula, specifically its capital city, La Paz in 1940. He heard a folk tale from the locals, which he took to write one of his masterpieces, The Pearl (1947).

While he was finishing his novel, he also co-wrote the script for the Mexican-American film La Perla (1947). He traveled to Mexico during the filming to contribute with the creative effort.
