To join the Confederate States of America.

AnswerFlorida officially seceded from the United States of America on 10 January 1861. It was the third state to do so. They left the United States of America for several reasons. Primarily they left because of the political promises that Abraham Lincoln had made during his presidential campaign to the northern industries. He promised (and did) to raise protectionist tariffs for northern industries. At the time the South paid the most in taxes, by some accounts the taxes they paid accounted for over 80% of the taxes collected by the federal government. With Lincoln's new protectionist taxes, the new tax rate for foreign goods were set to increase immediately to 37% and eventually would be increased to over 50%. This was done to pay back the northern corporations who had backed Lincoln for president. At the time the north's manufactured goods were poorly made and cost more than European manufactured goods. Other political reasons included that Lincoln threatened to create a centralised bank, started the first income tax, etc.

Florida also feared that Abraham Lincoln would usurp powers not delegated to the federal government and powers that were delegated to the Federal legislative branch. These fears were well founded. During his term as president Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus (a power delegated to the legislative branch), took political prisoners in the north, shut down newspapers that criticized himself, his administration or his war on the CSA, exiled the Speaker of the House whenever he called Lincoln out on his usurpation of powers, attempted to arrest the Chief Justice, declared war on the CSA (a power delegated to the legislative branch, not the executive), etc.
