The U.S. maintained a presence in West Berlin during the Cold War to demonstrate its commitment to defending Western ideals and countering Soviet influence in Europe. West Berlin was a symbol of freedom and democracy, surrounded by communist East Germany, and served as a critical outpost for intelligence and military operations. Additionally, the presence helped reassure West Berliners and allied nations of America's support against potential Soviet aggression. This strategic positioning was essential for maintaining stability in a divided Europe.

blocking west berlin
Berlin is the cultural center of Germany. According to the Four Powers Treaty, West Germany did NOT have control over West Berlin. It was governed by the US, British and French Armies.
Eisenhower is the one who said, "you refuse to withdraw troops from West Berlin." He said this in reference to Truman who had failed to withdraw US troops from Berlin.
Berlin blockade. The Soviets blockaded West Berlin to force it to become communist (it was democratic). The Berlin Airlift is when the US airlifted supplies to West Berlin. You know so they don't give in to communism.
We gave food and supplies to West (west, or east, i think its west) Berlin. Since Germany banned us from going in and driving supplies to them, we decided to get creative and start airlifting the supplies to them. This was of course, to keep W. Berlin from falling to Communism, which the other half of Germany was. Oh yeah, and the Berlin wall was put up, so people could not go to the W. Berlin area (coming from E. Berlin), however you could go to E. Berlin (coming from W. Berlin).

After WW2 the "Iron Curtain" isolated West Berlin form the "free" part of Germany and the Allies (Lead by the US) flew food into West Berlin so as to prevent it falling to the communists.
