Why did the United States enter the war in 1917?

The United States joined the Korean War because the US feared that all countries in Asia would be turned to a communist country. At the time of the Korean War, China was a huge factor because China supported North Korea. If the United States did not support South Korea then the domino effect would have been put to effect.

In other words.. The United States joined the Korean War to resist communism from spreading.

• In World War 1, eventually because of the sinking of the Lusitania, an American cruise liner. Recent evidence indicates the sinking may have been justified as an act of war, as the ship was carrying ammunitions.
• In World War 2, the bombing of Pearl Harbour was the catalyst for war against Japan. After Germany under Hitler treatised with Japan, they also became at war against the US.

The US wished to remain neutral during WWI, but was eventually brought into the war due to German aggression. Two main events caused the US to join the Great War:

• The sinking of the Lusitania:

As the UK and Germany were on opposite sides of WWI and were competing naval countries, Germany ordered all U-boats to sink any Allied ship it came across. Unfortunately, this meant that merchant ships and other commercial boats were targets. The Lusitania was a British cruiseliner carrying almost 2,000 passengers and was sank by a German U-boat on May 20, 1915. More than half of the passengers drowned, over a hundred of which were American. Germans also attacked many more Allied and US ships. But the Lusitania attack especially angered the US, and caused the US to look towards putting a stop to German aggression.

• The Zimmerman Telegram:

The US invaded Mexico in 1846, causing the Mexican-American War. This was during the ideology of Manifest Destiny, where the US was looking to expand across the North American continent, but Mexico stood in the way. The US won the war not even two years later, and acquired 1/3 of Mexico's territory (which includes the southern portion of the Western US today). However, the US paid Mexico over eighteen million dollars for the cost of the war. After this war, Mexico went into isolation and avoided relations with the US. But once WWI broke out, and Mexico remained neutral, Germany looked to change this. Because Germany was basically fighting the rest of the Great Powers (except Austria-Hungary) alone, it looked for more allies. The state secretary of foreign affairs, Arthur Zimmerman, sent a telegram to Mexico offering aid if they were to attack the US. Germany would send men and supplies to Mexico, and if they won, Mexico would regain its land lost during the Mexican-American War. Germany had all of its hands tied at the moment, and most likely couldn't send men or supplies to Mexico; the US was also much too powerful for Mexico to take on regardless of German support. Even though Mexico denied the offer, the US declared war on Germany and even placed officers on the Mexican border. This event was probably the most significant in causing the US to enter WWI.
