St. Joseph's feast day is celebrated on March 19, and in Italy it is also Father's Day because Joseph raised Jesus as his son and was a perfect human father. Italians do not wear red on this day. Years ago the Communists had a national holiday approved on May 1st as Festa Del Lavoro or let's say Labor Day and did wear red because it is the communist color. The Church, to contrast communism, decided to celebrate St. Joseph the Worker (S. Giuseppe Lavoratore) on May 1st. The communists continued to wear red to assert their political views. Wearing red on May 1st has nothing to do with St. Joseph.
