Why do Mexicans use pesos and American dollars?

Mexican Pesos (MXP) are the official currency of Mexico. Mexicans bid their merchandise in dollars so they can sell their stuff to lazy American tourists who don't convert their dollars into pesos.

First of all, "peso" means weight in Spanish.

When Mexico became a colony of Spain in 1521, they had to use a currency for commercial transactions on the new "vice-royalty"; transporting Spanish currency to the Americas was deemed impossible because at the time, "paper" currency did not exist and money consisted of coins made from valuable materials such as gold and silver. Hence, the new regents began to mint silver coins made from the large deposits found in Mexico, naming them as "pieces of eight" or "pesos duros". The later name is Spanish for hard weight. Out of sheer habit, these coins were known as pesos.

When Mexico attained its independence from Spain in 1821, they needed to mint their own currency, and as pesos were already different from the Spanish currency known as Spanish reals, they used such denomination for their new currency.
