The queen of England is the head of state, represented in Australia by the Governor-General. However, the Queen has no real function and many Australians want Australia to be a republic, but the government in 1999 phrased the referendum so poorly that nobody understood the question and they told people to vote no if they didn't understand, so it didn't happen.
