The main reason they changed the name in 1957 when they gained their independence from the British was that they did not want their country to be defined as only being good for one thing. They changed the name to Ghana in remembrance of the Ghanain empire that ruled the area during medieval times. The name of this empire was Wagadugu and the kings that ruled it were given the title of Ghana, and were referred to as Ghanain, so this new name symbolized that all residents of this country should be seen as kings.
