When the British took over Singapore as a colony, it treasured this little red dot because it lies right in the middle of the trade route between India and China. This trade route is one valued source of income for the British and therefore Singapore naturally prospered and became rich.

This attracted many Chinese from mainly the southern provinces of China like Fujian and Guangdong. They came here to work as labourers. In the Raffles Town Plan, he demarcated areas for the people of the different races to live in order to prevent conflicts. This area that he gave to the Chinese in Singapore was called Chinatown.
