Because it is native to the temperate forests of central and southern Mexico. It was first cultivated by the Aztecs, who named the flower as 'xicaxochitl' (Pronounced sheeka-socheel), and used it for food, ceremonies, and decorative purposes. Currently there are more than 20,000 varieties of the flower, but all of them can be traced back to the original sample, which was cultivated in Mexico.
