At first, the Aztecs founded the city in 1325. They called it Mexico-Tenochtitlan and was the center of their empire for the following 196 years. They located there because an ancient prophesy stated that whenever they found an eagle eating a snake atop a cactus, that should be the place they would found their capital city. You can see the symbol of this prophesy on the Mexican flag.

In 1521 when the Spanish conquistadors conquered the Aztecs, they used the same city as capital of the new colony, known as New Spain. During the following 300 years, Mexico City became the political, cultural and economic center of this colony.

By 1821 when Mexico became independent, the new rulers thought it was easier to keep Mexico City as capital of the new country. Since then, such city has been the capital of Mexico.
