pithole is a ghost town primarily because the oil which brought people into the city in droves, ran out. as the amount of people came in, the oil decreased in availiability...in a short few years...the wells basically dried up, and people started leaving. all that is left now is a few old pipelines over the hillside, many cellerholes, and grassy sections in between the marked streets with fun facts about the area. the visitor center has a scale replica of the town at it's peak which is kinda neat. the reason there are no buildings is because as people left, they sold everything they had including the buildings. most of which sold for firewood. others that remained eventually caught fire due to poor workmanship because people were in a hurry to get their hands on the oil. that all being said the place is worth a look around. just watch when you arent on the main paths through or you may wind up in one of the many deep (5-10ft) holes which i can tell you from experience is not fun.
