It is because in 1922 a treaty came into force that gave most of Ireland independence, creating what we now know as the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The majority of the people in the part of Ireland known as Northern Ireland wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom while the rest of Ireland wanted independence, and that is what happened.
