Why is iceland a sparsely populated country?

There would be lots of reasons. The main ones would be that the land is not so good in some parts, particularly the west of Ireland and there and there are not as many jobs there. Much of Ireland is rural, and there are not many large cities and towns, so it is harder to sustain a large population in some areas, once you are away from the main cities. The largest city in Ireland is Dublin which is on the east coast. So lots of people live in or close to Dublin, meaning that the population there is larger. Many people from the rural parts of Ireland would have left Ireland or moved towards the east.

There is better infrastructure in the east than there is in the west, although it is improving. That makes the east more attractive for people to live or for companies to base themselves. Also the east is nearer to Britain, so Ireland's main ports have been along the east coast for trading with Britain and other parts of Europe, which is another reason for the east being more populated than the west. People have also moved to live closer to other cities in other parts of the country, leaving less people in rural areas. So cities like Cork in the south and Galway in the west have larger populations than areas that surround them.
