It is not stupid at all how the island of Hispaniola is shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Many islands are split between nations, for example, Borneo is split between three: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. New Guinea is split between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. And Ireland is split between the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
Hispaniola was first claimed by Spain. However French settlers, mostly pirates, began settling on the western 1/3 of the island (what is now Haiti). Through the Treaty of Ryswick, this area was ceded from Spain to France. However, in 1795, all of Hispaniola was ceded to France from Spain. When Haiti revolted against French rule and won independence in 1804, it included all of Hispaniola. However, in 1844, the Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti. This is why Haiti, the mainly French colony, and the Dominican Republic, the mainly Spanish colony, share the island of Hispaniola.
