After the end of World War 2 countries like Britain had fought a war in which it had to focus its entire economy on building and maintaining its war machine. Britain was in a state of total war, which effectively bankrupted the nation.
Along with economical problems, global political view on the ideology of empires was frowned upon. This put nations such as Britain, France, Holland and Belgium in difficult political positions, especially with the USA which had its own ambitions to secure its position as the new superpower along with the Soviet Union.
Britain however made attempts to maintain most of its Empire despite international pressure.
