The position of Great Britain in the US Civil War was one of neutrality. The Confederacy hoped that Great Britain would officially recognize the Confederacy as a nation, however, this did not happen.
Technically, Great Britain remained neutral during the US Civil War. The Confederacy did all it could on a diplomatic basis to gain recognition from Great Britain.

Many southerners hoped dependence on cotton would force great Britain to formally reconize the confederacy as an independent nation.
Initially, the tendency of Great Britain was to support the Confederacy, on the theory that as the original 13 Colonies had a right to independence from Great Britain, so the Confederacy ought to have a right to independence from the United States. If British support were actively given to the Confederacy, munitions and other resources would flow to them and it would be more difficult, and perhaps impossible to defeat them. The Union therefore needed to keep Great Britain neutral in that conflict. Once the Civil War became clearly about the abolition of slavery rather than just holding unwilling states in the Union, that became much easier because Great Britain had already abolished slavery and was actively opposing the slave trade along the African coast.
Life in Great Britain was horrible ! people from there always sailed to the confederacy states of America because of the way they were treated and the taxes they had to pay
The CSS Alabama was a warship built in Great Britain. It was built secretly, expressly for the use of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
The Confederacy believed that Great Britain would intervene via "peace talks" to benefit the South. Confederate leaders believed that cotton was a bargaining chip to be used. It was a valid argument. Great Britain's cotton supply came via the South and 75% of its imported cotton was from the Confederacy. Also, the textile mills in England employed 20% of English workers.
There was nothing that ever indicated that the Southern States, the Confederacy, was ever in a situation regarding a war with Great Britain. Great Britain helped the Confederacy by building a small number of fast light, ironclads to help it thwart the Union's blockade of Southern seaports. These vessels were successful in sinking a sizable number of Union ships.
