During British rule, when New Delhi was to be declared the capital (1911-1916), the governor general's residency was given an enormous scale and prominent position.

This residency was built by Edwin Landseer Lutyens and Herbert Baker with the later one having majority of contribution.

From August 15, 1947 to January 26, 1950 the Viceroy's house was known as government house since the post of lord Mountbatten (who stayed there for 10 months after Indian independence) had changed from viceroy to governor general of India.

When on January 26, 1950 India was declared republic , the government house or the viceroy's house that boasts of 340 rooms and is spread over a vast area of 18,580 sq mtrs was renamed the rashtrapati bhavan.
