Why was opera made?

It was initially an attempt to recreate the ancient Greek theatre which was believed to involve music. Opera then continued to be a form of theatre in which the music played the major role and in which the parts were taken by singers instead of actors. Opera has continually reinvented itself ranging from being a showcase for fine singing (though not always) to the most sublime form of theatre and occasionally both.
