Why was the burlin wall built?

The communists built the Berlin Wall to keep the people from East Berlin from escaping to West Berlin. As the communists took over more and more of the economy they made a bigger and bigger mess of things. West Berlin had prosperity; East Berlin had poverty. More and more of the competent people of East Berlin simply walked across the border. As a result, the communists had to build a wall to keep their people inside. We have learned from communism that government is totally incompetent when it tries to run business. Today with the property collapse we have also learned that we have real problems when the government does not regulate!
