St.Petersburg, Russia was founded in 1703 in the course of so-called Northern War with Sweden. The core objective was to regain access to Baltic Sea and convenient trade routes to Europe (in the 17th century Russia traded with Europe via port of Archangel in the far north, which was costly and inconvenient). St.Petersburg soon became a symbol of pro-European vector of development of Peter the Great's Russia.
