The US 'won' Puerto Rico in the Spanish American War. They have maintained control of that country. There is often speculation about it becoming the 51st State of the US, but to date, the people wish to maintain their own identity.

Added : There are several good books and videos on that subject from PBS and the History Channel , the history and politics of the war are very interesting .

In a nutshell : T. Roosavelt & associates pushed for intervention for political , economic and security reasons as there was a local revolution brewing in Cuba .

While on a 'peacemaking' mission' to Havana ,the USS Maine blew up in the harbour , the military sugested it was a accedent (it was proven years later that hot coal infiltrated the powder magazine) but the media and others with an interest woooped up a War frenzy in the US .

After the US won the battles for Cuba and the Phillipenes , Pureto Rico was nagotiated in Paris , there was not much fighting going on in PR (comparativly speaking) although a US ship blew a large section of ElMorro' wall and troops assembled near Ponce . The revolutionists gave way to the US occupation mainly because they couldn't win by themselves .
