North America was not populated by 'Missionaries' - the job of a missionary is to convert people who do not believe into believers. The early colonists of North America were not so much missionaries as religious refugees, fleeing to America so that they could set up communities free to worship as they wished/believed. This migration happened because of the religious oppression that was occurring in many part of Europe at the time.

No, The United States is mainly Christian and the largest group is the Catholic Church, but as far as total population, it is not the largest belief in the US. The original thirteen colonies were mostly founded by protestants and Deists fleeing oppression in Europe, either from Catholics or Anglicans.
Because the Pilgrim fathers were fleeing religous persecution in Europe.
The pilgrims mainly settled in New England because they wanted religious freedom. The majority of the first pilgrims were either Puritans (wanted to purify Anglican church) or Separatists (wanted to separate from Anglican church). It is also important to realize that they wanted religious freedom for themselves, not other religious congregations.
