To effectively waterproof a tent using a tarp, you can place the tarp over the tent and secure it tightly to the ground using stakes or heavy objects. Make sure the tarp extends beyond the edges of the tent to prevent water from seeping in. Additionally, consider using a seam sealer or waterproof spray on the tarp for extra protection against moisture.
to the best of my knowledge the only thing on an previously "untreated" tent would be the tarpaulin floor material. The fabric that makes up the b"body" of the tent isn't truly waterproof when "untreated"( a waterproofing solution). The fabric will shed water but will wick through on contact from the opposite side. So if a tent isn't treated with a waterproofing product the only part inherently waterproof would be the floor.
the fact that it is probably waterproof !! ;)
A camping footprint is designed to go outside, and underneath the tent. Additionally if the footprint was purchased with the tent, it will often be the exact shape of the tent and will have holes in the corners which the tent poles are often designed to go through, securing the footprint in place. When the footprint is under the tent it should help to prevent the bottom of the tent from getting wet. Also the shiny side goes up (the waterproof coating). This is to protect the waterproof quality of the footprint. -Mr. Tent
