Ike certainly was around many of the most important people of his lifetime and formed close but official understandings with such people as Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Bernard Law Montgomery, Douglas Mac Arthur, George Patton, Omar Bradley, George Marshall, Charled de Gaulle, Joseph Stalin, Marshall Zhukov and Harry Truman. He was the consumate political General Officer, and appeared to have gotten along with everyone, even if he may not have agreed with them. To say that he admired any of them is improbable. He had wanted to be a professional baseball player, and may have held many baseball greats in high esteem, even though he never personally knew them. He may have admired the great Carlisle Indian School athlete Jim Thorpe, who he once tackled in a game. He held his mother in high esteem although he was a military man and she was an ardent Jehovah's Witness. Ike liked Mamie and perhaps Kay Summersby and everyone knows that he loved golf. Perhaps the Reverend Billy Graham was his closest personal advisor during his presidency and Ike may have had genuine admiration for him. Ike was an enigma, sometimes highly rated and often as a do nothing President.
