Ulysses S. Grant grew up in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He spent much of his childhood in nearby Georgetown, where his family moved when he was a young boy. Grant came from a modest background, and his early experiences in Ohio shaped his character and leadership style.
From 1860 to 1861, Ulysses S. Grant lived with his family in Galena, Illinois. He later moved to Springfield and Cairo in 1861 during the Civil War. In 1865, after the end of the war, he moved back to Galena.

He fought in the Mexican War and was later stationed in California. He quit the army and lived near St. Louis for awhile, then moved to Galena, Illinois. After the Civil War, he lived in Washington, DC. After he was President, he moved to Mount McGregor, NY where he died.
