Blaine had been in Congress for a long time and had been involved with seom very questionable relations with railroad executives. The election more of less came down to New York where Blaine managed to offend both Irish Catholics and labor unions. (Cleveland had his own problems with morals but they were about his relation with a woman and he stood up to them.)
