One of the greatest incidents was during the year that the Declaration of Independence was announced. That summer and fall, the Continental Army had been pushed by the British through New York and New Jersey with defeat after defeat and into Pennsylvania. The troops were dejected and in terrible shape and were going to disban at the end of the year. Things looked hopeless but Washington was able to hold the army together and promise better days ahead and was able to deliver on that promise starting with a successful sneak attack of British forces at Trenton, New Jersey commencing on Christmas night 1776 which was the turning point of the revolution.
