The Kennedy family history goes as far back as the Civil War and the CA gold rush. Great grandfather Kennedy made money in the gold rush and invested it in business with the Irish mob in Boston. One of the endeavors that they were involved in was running booze in the 1920's during Prohibition. Joe Kennedy used the money after Prohibition to start Seagram's. This was eventually sold and he became politically active in the city of Boston and Mass as well as an ambassador to England for the US government. One of his main goals was to have a son as the first Catholic president. When his oldest son died it fell to John to full-fill this goal.
