How do resources affect the development of a country?

Natural Resources are the basic building blocks of a country. Natural resources come in many forms, and are just as equally important to the development of the country. Firstly, we have agriculture. Food grown through farming is important for development, as without food, the basic necessity to survival, people will be malnourished and unable to work.

The forests are able to provide us with the materials for construction, furniture and paper, important resources used in our daily life.

Mineral resources such as diamonds, coal, fossil fuels etc. are used to generate power, as well as selling them to other parts of the world.

Renewable resources such as wind, solar, water are able to provide us with limitless energy, not forgetting the most basic form of survival and civilization (water), and the energy of all living things (solar power).

Natural resources in excess, such as crops, timber, minerals etc. can be exported to other parts of the world to provide the country with a stable economy for development. Without one another, the development of the country would definitely be slowed down.

the resources of a country will determind what that country's main export or what the country mainly eats. (if the resource is edible like fish)

ex:

If Japan's best natural resource is it's abundance of fish they will export and eat a lot of fish

Saudi Arabia's main expoprt is oil, they will export it and buy what ever they want to eat.

The more natural resources a country has, the faster it will grow, all other things held equal (that is, assuming that the country does not have an abnormal situation with morale or labor or transportation that would interfere with the country's growth).

This is due to two big reasons, and several small ones I won't go into. I'll start with the most practical: The country in question can consume the resources as it works toward its own advancement, especially if the technology they are using is already known or freely shared from another source. For instance, if a country has a lot of iron and trees, if someone were to teach their laborers how to be blacksmiths, miners and lumberjacks, it would be a simple matter for them to begin manufacturing things out of metal (lumberjacks to gather materials for creating a forge and the tools in it, and miners to gather coal and raw metal, and blacksmiths to shape it). However if they did not have metal to use, it would severely complicate matters and ultimately slow them down if not halt them altogether.

The other big reason is trade. If an underdeveloped country has a natural resource that other countries consider valuable, especially if the resource is not quite as valuable at this point in time to the country that has it, the resource can be traded. Precious metals such as gold and silver, precious gems, and exotic foods and fruits are examples of these things.

So what do these "trade goods" do? While silk does have a use in some technology, it's certainly not as useful to an up-and-coming country as something like hard-wrought steel. Such things as silk and caviar may not play a direct and vital role in a country's development, but they can be traded for something that does. Your countrymen can continue to wear wool, which is by far cheaper in the international market than silk, while they trade their silk for hard-wrought steel from England, which will in turn help them to advance technologically, especially if they do not yet possess the ability to create hard-wrought steel themselves
