Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson is no longer alive (she died in 2007), but in her day, she did some very interesting things that few women were doing. For one example, she owned her own radio station-- she bought it in 1943; there had been other women owners as far back as 1922, but there were very few and they did not own their stations for a long time. Lady Bird Johnson was a very successful radio station owner, who not only owned that one station in Austin, Texas but was later able (in 1952) to buy a television station, the only one in Austin. In a time when women were only expected to be homemakers, Lady Bird Johnson showed that a woman could be both a wife and mother and a successful businesswoman.

She also became well-known for beautifying the area near the White House, encouraging the planting of millions of flowers and making the area much more attractive for tourists. She also wanted to see more flowers planted, especially along highways. In addition, she was perhaps the first First Lady to have her own press secretary, to help promote the projects and charities she cared about and to make sure they received media attention.
