A typical enlistment for the US Army would be between 2-6 years, now it depends on the job that you choose, but enlisting in to the US Army is not a prison sentence, it is your choice, you sign the contract you make that commitment.

It is up to you ultimately, you do not have to join or enlist into the Army or any other Branch of the Military, that is a choice YOU make. Now for enlistment contracts in the Army they will range from 2-6 years (depneding on the Job (MOS) in which YOU choose the total time YOU will serve on Active Duty or in the Reserves.

However in each Branch of the Military regardless of the term you choose in your initial entry contract you are automatically enlisting for 8 years, this is called a Military Service Obligation (MSO). If YOU choose a 3 year Active Duty/Reserve term in your contract you are agreeing to serve 3 years on Active Duty/Reserve and 5 years in the In-active Ready Reserve (IRR). While in the IRR you will not maintain a Military ID card, you will not receive a pay check, you will not be required to drill or train, you will not receive any medical or dental benefits (other than what you get from the VA), you are out of the Army. Now if the Army or America is to get involved in a major Military conflict you MAYBE recalled for an undisclosed term to serve on Active duty in support of that Operation.

The IRR allows congress and the Government the opportunity to have options other than enacting the Draft when the have people who have VOLUNTEERED to serve their country and are qualified and trained in a job. Since 2001 approximately 2,500 soldiers (out of approximately 500,000+ Soldiers currently on IRR) have been recalled from the IRR to serve on Active Duty.

If going to War, possibly having to shoot at someone, serving your country or the time YOU are not forced to serve is an issue, you might want to reconsider you thoughts about the Military and think about a career at McDonald's.
