After his first term in office, Abraham Lincoln was famous for his assassination by John Wilkes Booth in 1865 at Fords Theatre, dying the day after. Yet there have been other presidents that have been shot just like him. James A. Garfield, a Republican who was the 20th president and famous for fighting with the Union in the Civil War, was shot by Charles J. Guiteau in 1881, just months after he took the oath of office. William McKinley, another Republican who was the 25th president at the time of the Spanish-American War, was shot by Leon Czolgosz in 1901, at the beginning of his second term. Finally, Democrat John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, whose term was marked by the Cuban Missile Crisis, was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. Republican Ronald Reagan, the 40th president near the end of the Cold War, was shot by John Hinckley Jr. in 1981 at the beginning of his first term, but was the only president to survive an assassination attempt and managed to serve his full two terms in office.
